The Rivers

Discover Montana’s premier rivers, each offering a unique fly fishing experience and unforgettable scenery.

Bitterroot River

The Bitterroot River is a classic freestone river flowing through Montana’s picturesque Bitterroot Valley. Stretching nearly 100 miles from its headwaters to its confluence with the Clark Fork River, the Bitterroot offers a diverse and thriving fishery. This river is a dry fly angler’s paradise, with a healthy population of Westslope cutthroat, rainbow, and brown trout. Its riffles, undercut banks, and ample log jams provide ideal habitats for trout and excellent fishing opportunities for both beginners and experienced anglers.

Why Fish Here:

Clark Fork River

The Clark Fork River, Montana’s largest river by volume, flows from its headwaters near Butte to the Idaho border, offering one of the state’s most diverse fisheries. Known for its spring and early summer trout fishing, the Clark Fork supports a variety of species and provides anglers with a unique, dynamic fishing experience. As water temperatures rise in late summer, fishing shifts to warm-water species, making this river a great choice for multi-species anglers seeking a mix of trout and other fish in a scenic setting.

Why Fish Here:

Missouri River

The Missouri River is widely regarded as one of the top tailwaters in the country, boasting around seven thousand trout per mile. Known for its crystal-clear water and consistent flows, the “Mo” provides an exceptional fishing experience, with opportunities for nymphing along grass flats and drop-offs, as well as casting single dry flies to rising trout. This river is a dream for anglers of all levels, offering some of the best trout fishing in Montana in a serene, scenic environment.
